• Brief history and development of Motivational Interviewing
• What is not consistent with MI – roadblocks to effective communication
• Why persuasion doesn’t work
• The cycle of change
• Conditions necessary for change
• Internal and external motivation
• Key principles – developing discrepancy in clients, building self-efficacy, managing discord and eliciting ‘Change Talk’
• ‘OARS’ – the skills of the approach
• Identifying and overcoming communication barriers in support work
• Change talk – why it is important
• ‘DARN’ language – Desire, Ability, Reason and Need for change – individual exercise
• Eliciting change talk
• Decisional balance strategy
• ‘Sustain Talk’ and Discord, working with these concepts and encouraging the change process
• Putting it all together – case study / large group exercise
• Evaluation and consideration of incorporating MI into your work
• Review and feedback on reflective practice exercises
Pre Course Work
Read “What is Motivational Interviewing” article by Stephen Rollnick and William Miller.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, delegates should be able to:
• Understand the principles of Motivational Interviewing
• Understand and practice basic Motivational Interviewing techniques
• Apply Motivational Interviewing skills to their work practice
• Support vulnerable clients, in both residential and congregational settings, to take personal responsibility and effect change in their own lives
